Mingulay, Barra &
The Atlantic Edge

This unique Scottish expedition is a superb journey in one of most remote, exposed and magical parts of the UK - aiming to paddle south from the Isle of Barra, exploring this remote, uninhabited and incredible island chain - Sandray, Pabay, Mingulay and Berneray. The islands sit on the exposed edge of the Atlantic Ocean, are steeped in history with a incredible array of wildlife.

The islands sit at the southern end of the Outer Hebrides, and are truly at “The Atlantic Edge” of the UK, exposed to the Atlantic swell from the west. The eastern sides of the islands offer landings on incredible white sand beaches, whilst the exposed western sides have awe inspiring towering cliffs over 150m, rock architecture, arches and an amazing exposed feel. The feeling of specialty at the end of the chain under the 18m Barra Head Lighthouse (constrcuted in 1833), with nothing but open sea, is indescribable.

The island of Mingulay will be a key destination for our paddle, which is often referred to as “The other St. Kilda.” The island was lived on until 1912, and the remains of the old village, and old school, are well worth exploring to truly get a sense of what it was like to live on such a remote, exposed and beautiful island. A walk up to the top of the island’s hills to gaze out across the Atlantic with towering cliffs beneath you is also fantastic, ideally time to catch hopefully a stunning sunset out to the west.

With the remote location comes an array of sea and bird life - cetaceans such as whales, basking sharks, Atlantic grey seals are regular sightings in these waters, whilst sea bird colonies are abundant on the cliffs of the west coast - gannets, skewers, puffins, guillemots and so many more.

The conditions often mean long period Atlantic swell is commonplace here, and the sounds between the islands also have strong tides running - which makes this a suitably fulfilling and challenging expedition for the intermediate+ paddler. We will always aim to make the very best decisions, and aim to enjoy the right level of challenge, paddling in these waters.

It truly is one of the most majestic places in the world to explore by sea kayak!

Anglesey Circumnavigation

Join us for this circumnavigation of the rugged and diverse Island of Anglesey. 120km of varied mountainous landscapes, tidal flow and an abundance of aquatic and land based wildlife.

The goal of a circumnavigation will be balanced so that we have time to explore and enjoy the coastline, wild camping as we go at a good time so we can enjoy “being” in the place, and not just pass through it.

Making good decisions together as a team, together with an expert guide who has intimate local knowledge, we will utilise the weather forecast and tidal predictions to get the most from our days.  We will make use of the tide as best we can at Anglesey’s many exposed headlands - working our way around this stunning island and it’s varied coastline.

Ynys Mon (Anglesey), at 261 square miles, is the largest in Wales and the Irish Sea, the seventh largest in Britain. The northern and eastern coasts of the island are rugged, and the southern and western coasts are generally gentler; the interior is gently undulating. South Stack and Puffin Island, are home to seabird colonies. Large parts of the island's coastline have been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The Menai Strait next to the mainland is spanned by the impressive Menai Suspension Bridge, designed by Thomas Telford in 1826.

The sheer cliff faces at South Stack near Holyhead provide nesting sites for large numbers of auks, including puffins, razorbills and guillemots, along with choughs and peregrine falcons. Anglesey holds several tern species, including the roseate tern on three breeding sites.

Outline Itinerary

Day 1 - We will be flexible with our start point on the island in order to maximise tidal flows and avoid significant wind and tide races. With this in mind we will likely meet somewhere central for a pre-trip breakfast and relocate accordingly, setting up a shuttle if required. This will be communicated in the build up and immediate days leading up to the expedition. For those wishing to stay the night before, recommendations can be made.

The trip will then see us aiming to circumnavigate the island, wild camping each night.  A shuttle may well be set up if required, based on the weather and conditions.

Day 5 - We will aim to finish mid-afternoon in order to allow people to make their journey's home that evening if desired.
